Mediatization of science
a conceptual approach and applicability in academic research.

The proposed article addresses how the term mediatization of science has been used in academia with an emphasis on identifying studies that address the relationship between the process of scientific dissemination in society through traditional vehicles and those considered digital. It discusses the origin of the use of the term mediatization of science in academia by national and international authors and identifies patterns of use and applicability of the term both in reference works and in publications by researchers from Brazilian higher education institutions. It brings a survey on the historical approach to mediatization of science from a reference bibliography and authors such as Weingart (2009), Schäfer (2010, 214) and Fausto Neto (2012), to elucidate the evolution of the appropriation of the term and its application in academic research.
